Overheard this week was “So many restaurants and hotels try so hard to create this vibe and here it is at the-miumiu-london in just three days.” And it was an incredible vibe. There was a one of kind, decadent backdrop at Cafe Royal, with lovely fashion, cuisine and speakers, but what stayed with each of us was a sense of momentary greatness for women. The coming together we shared in was so affirming to us all, in terms of continuing creative work and thinking on our own. I know I have so much more to explore after all the inspirations from our guest speakers and guests. My own personal “girl in” takeaway?

Girls do not just want to have fun, we also want a fulfilled life and conversation is our way of getting to it. Fortunately, our conversations are “to be continued.” Last week was just a prelude to what will be an ongoing conversation online and at future locations. In the meantime, I am going to follow Miu Miu’s creative production and events in many cities. As much as we talked about the spirit of our times this past week, we all felt there is so much speed and mobility today. The next fashion look, the next event, the next conversation is always approaching. We can dig into understanding the present and look forward to what is to come. I am off to other cities, but will be right back here with more.

Girl in London

Our week in London was just a hint of the potential for a contemporary women’s salon. There is a wonderful feeling about being a woman among other like-minded women. Our friends at the-miumiu-london were stylish, inspired, creative and engaged in the world. From talented actresses Bonnie Wright and Felicity Jones, to fashion thinkers Penny Martin and Alice Rawsthorn, there were many conversations about defining roles, the spirit of our times, and collaboration. Earlier women’s clubs were based on traditions of gender separation but now we gather together confidently with new ideas. One of the great privileges of our times is that we can willingly enjoy all the benefits of being women. the-miumiu has set a stage for future incarnations in other cities — and on-line — where women can meet and participate in fashion, dining, film, design and discussion.

Overheard

“So many restaurants and hotels try so hard to create this vibe and here it is at the-miumiu-london in just three days.”

Featured Blog

StyleBubble on the-miumiu-london: “An open discourse amongst likeminded women”

I had a chance to talk with chef Margot Henderson of Rochelle Canteen.

How do you feel about taking part in collaborative events with fashion, architecture, film and conversation?

Well its an exciting project and it seems to be working, lots of exciting people coming, it’s been great working with the kitchen here, great team, and having April was perfect, very exciting. I think it’s about making things work and having a certain energy to them that makes people enjoy it. It’s great that it’s about women cooking and putting women more on the mark as chefs that are important.

How would you describe the creative spirit of our times?
Well food is big, its all about food… food is happening. I think there’s a sureness that the food industry have at times, we have at the moment; everyone knows about food, everyone’s eating in restaurants, its an exciting time to be a chef.

How does being a woman relate to your creative production?
Well it relates to everything cause I am a woman and life is different as a woman, you have children and I’m a wife and I’m a cook, so it forms everything you do!

And you mentioned to me coming here to the Cafe Royal. Can you tell us about that?
I came here when I first met Fergus, my husband, and his father Brian Henderson said “Oh darling we must take you to the Grill Room” and we had lots of little quail eggs and they were warm and delicious and it felt so grand and beautiful and it was very special. It’s a special place! And its brilliant that it isn’t gone and been ripped down, you know, we need to have our heritage as much as we need to have modern things as well… So I think its all good!

Girl in London

This past week at the-miumiu-london has encouraged us all to think more about the spirit of our times, collaboration, and importantly like-minded women coming together. This idea of women’s clubs evokes for some people the past of gender separation. But for most it feels very contemporary, a new turn in how we unite as women. Many were talking this week about the new women’s club Grace Belgravia that has opened in London. There is something very disarming about being a woman among all women. There is a grace and acceptance about sharing space and ideas with each other, without social pressure. the-miumiu-london has been such a wonderful week of conversation, dining, architecture, film, fashion and culture. We have discussed creative work, role models and design, and are learning that our conversations together are just beginning.

Seen Within

“I would say that nowadays it’s kind of about having your own style and picking what you like. It’s not so much about fitting in to a certain aesthetic or style, its more about having your own individuality. I would say that I kind of threw on what I picked up this morning but I don’t know, probably the spirit of our times does affect the way I dress.

miu miu girl: looks of the day

“The spirit of our times is wary, and does it relate to the way I dress? No, because I think that the more nervous people get at their surroundings and what’s happening in the future, the more they are, or I am becoming much more celebratory and feminine in my wardrobe. So I’m much more into kind of decoration, colour, a much more exuberant kind of wardrobe than I ever was wearing when we were actually in boom times, and then I think I would have described my wardrobe as quite minimalist, severe and almost a bit masculine. And now I’m rediscovering my femininity.”
